Tremosine

Contents

I first stumbled upon Tremosine a few years ago, and I was immediately captivated by its unique charm. The town is perched high above the lake, offering breathtaking panoramas that will leave you speechless.

The winding roads that lead up to Tremosine are a journey in themselves, with hairpin bends and panoramic viewpoints that offer stunning vistas of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

One of the highlights of Tremosine is its stunning natural beauty. The town is surrounded by lush forests and towering cliffs, and there are several hiking trails that offer opportunities to explore the area’s natural wonders.

What to see in Tremosine

Once you reach the town, you’ll be greeted by a labyrinth of narrow streets and charming squares. The architecture is a mix of medieval and Renaissance styles, with stone buildings and colorful facades.

1. Strada della Forra: a thrilling journey through the rocks

Top view of Strada della Forra

I’ve driven countless roads in my life, but none quite compare to the Strada della Forra in Tremosine. As you wind your way through the narrow passage, the towering cliffs seem to close in around you, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The road is a series of hairpin bends and sharp turns. The road was built in the early 20th century, and it still retains much of its original character.

Did you know that the Strada della Forra plays a significant role in the opening scene of “Quantum of Solace”? This stunning location features an exhilarating chase with none other than the iconic secret agent, James Bond, 007.

If you’re feeling brave, you can even walk along the Strada della Forra. There are several footpaths that parallel the road, offering stunning views of the valley and the lake. Be warned: the walk can be strenuous, and there are some sections that are quite steep.

2. Val di Bondo

An average day in Val di Bondo

Val di Bondo, a secluded valley tucked away in the heart of Tremosine, is like stepping into a secret, untouched world. The only sounds are the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds.

I stumbled upon Val di Bondo quite by accident while exploring the winding roads of Tremosine. As I turned a sharp corner, the valley suddenly unfolded before me, a lush green oasis surrounded by towering cliffs.

3. Terrazza del Brivido

Terrazza del Brivido landscape

When I found out about the Terrazza del Brivido in Tremosine, I knew I had to give it a try. After all, how often do you get the chance to stand on a platform that juts out over a sheer cliff?

Terrazza del Brivido is located at the top of the Strada della Forra, a winding road that offers breathtaking panoramas in its own right. As you approach the platform, you can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. The floor appears to be sturdy, but it’s hard not to wonder if it’ll hold.

Once you step onto the platform, the view is simply awe-inspiring. The lake stretches out below you and the mountains rise up on either side, their jagged peaks piercing the sky… you can try walking to the very edge of the platform too.

4. Monte Bestone

Bestone peak

Monte Bestone, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor Monte Baldo, is a hidden gem that deserves its own spotlight. Perched high above the town of Tremosine, this mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Garda and the surrounding countryside.

Once you reached the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning vistas at every turn. To the west, Lake Garda stretched out, its shimmering waters sparkling in the sunlight. To the east, the mountains rose up in a majestic display of nature’s power.

Several hiking trails lead to the summit of Monte Bestone, offering varying levels of difficulty. For those seeking a more challenging hike, the trail from Vesio is a great option. For a shorter, more leisurely walk, you can even start from the parking area near the summit.

5. Passo del Tremalzo

Cycling in Tremalzo

This mountain pass, winding through the Alps, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and Lake Garda. The pass itself is a marvel of engineering. The road twists and turns, with hairpin bends that will make your heart race.

If you reach the top on a clear day, you can even spot the distant peaks of the Dolomites. I remember the first time I drove up the winding road to the pass. The ascent was gradual, but the views got more spectacular with each hairpin turn.

The road is well-maintained, but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart, as it can be quite narrow and steep in some places. It’s a place where you can truly appreciate the beauty of the Italian Alps and the surrounding region.

Tremosine’s Beaches

Many beaches are situated near small villages, where you can explore the charming streets, sample delicious local cuisine, and experience the authentic venetian way of life.

Campione del Garda Beach

The water at Campione del Garda is a beautiful shade of turquoise and is incredibly clean and refreshing. The beach is mostly made up of pebbles, which can be a bit rough on your feet, but the stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere make it well worth it. There are a few amenities available at Campione del Garda beach, including a small bar where you can grab a drink or a snack. There’s also a small marina where you can rent a boat for a day trip to one of the nearby islands.

Nearest smallest beaches

While Campione Beach is undoubtedly the most famous and well-equipped beach in Tremosine, this enchanting town in Brescia hides numerous other smaller and more intimate beaches, perfect for those seeking tranquility and a closer connection with nature. These beaches are only accessible on foot or by boat, which helps to keep them more secluded. I recommend asking for information at the local tourist offices or from residents, who will be happy to point you in the direction of the most scenic paths and accesses.

Key Highlights:

  • Campione del Garda beach: spacious mixed terrain, amenities, stunning views.
  • Smallest Beaches: not easy access, pebble, no amenities, great environment.

Tremosine’s beaches are well worth a visit. Even if they are nestled amidst lush greenery and rocky cliffs, the waters are ideal for various water sports, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, and kayaking.

History of Tremosine

Evidence of human settlement in the Tremosine Valley dates back to the Roman era, when the area was known as “Tresmenianum”. The Romans established vineyards and olive groves, and the remains of their villas can still be found in the region.
Tremosine narrow streets

During the Middle Ages, Tremosine became part of the Republic of Venice, a powerful maritime state that controlled much of the Adriatic Sea.

The town’s strategic location made it an important outpost for Venice, and it played a role in defending the republic’s territory from invaders. In the 19th century, Tremosine experienced a period of economic growth, thanks to the development of tourism and agriculture. The town’s natural beauty and its proximity to Lake Garda attracted visitors from all over Europe, and the local economy flourished.
