Your Easter Holiday: the italian most heart-felt one

As the winter chill fades and the first signs of spring emerge, Lake Garda transforms into a paradise. With its festivals, traditions and rich cultural heritage, it’s the perfect destination for an Easter getaway.

Via Crucis and Easter processions

Living Via Crucis

Easter processions are widespread in Italy, and on Lake Garda too. But there is one that is way better than the others. Each year, the small village of Castelletto di Brenzone, hosts a living Via Crucis that is both deeply spiritual and incredibly moving. I’ve had the privilege of attending this extraordinary event several times, and each year it manages to surpass my expectations. The tradition of the living Via Crucis in Castelletto dates back to 1972, and it has since become one of the most popular events on Lake Garda.

The passion of Christ is brought to life through a procession that winds its way through the village, with over 100 local residents taking part. Imagine walking through the narrow streets of Castelletto, surrounded by people dressed in period costumes. You’ll encounter Roman soldiers, market vendors, and everyday villagers, all caught up in the drama of the Passion. As you follow the procession, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the authentic costumes to the realistic set pieces.

Dal Doss al Doss de Corsa (Dro, near Arco)

Participants start the race

The sun is beginning its ascent, casting long shadows over the town of Dro. The crowd is buzzing with anticipation, and you can almost feel the energy of the thousands of runners around you. This is Dal Doss al Doss de Corsa, a beloved Easter Monday tradition in the heart of Trentino. For over three decades, this non-competitive race has been a staple of Easter celebrations in the region.

The name “Dal Doss al Doss” translates to “from hill to hill”, hinting at the undulating terrain of the course. While it might not be a grueling marathon, the 7-kilometer route offers a challenging yet enjoyable run through stunning scenery. After crossing the finish line, runners and spectators gather at the top of Dos di S. Abbondio for a traditional picnic, complete with hard-boiled eggs and local wine.

Choco Music – musica per il palato (Riva del Garda)

All types of praline at Chocomusic festival

Piazza Cesare Battisti, surrounded by the tantalizing aroma of freshly made chocolate, hosts Choco Music, a delightful celebration of all things chocolate. Here in Riva del Garda, local artisan chocolatiers showcase their incredible skills, crafting a mouthwatering array of treats. Try their signature pralines, chocolate bars infused with unique flavors, and decadent chocolate spreads.

The Riva del Garda Band adds a sweet symphony to the event, performing live concerts throughout the festival. Choco Music is a family-friendly event, offering something for everyone. Kids can unleash their creativity at the ChocoBaby area, where they can decorate their own chocolate treats. With aprons, hats, and all the tools they need, young chocolatiers will have a blast.

S-ciapì (Pieve di Tremosine)

Numbered eggs

Ever heard of an egg-cracking contest? Well, if you’ve been to Tremosine during Easter, you probably have. This charming village on Lake Garda hosts a truly unique tradition called the S-ciapì. A world where hard-boiled eggs aren’t just a breakfast staple, but a weapon of choice. It’s more than just a game; it’s a centuries-old tradition that brings the community together.

It’s a traditional Easter game where participants gently tap their hard-boiled eggs against each other. The goal? To crack your opponent’s egg without cracking your own. It’s a delicate balance of strength and strategy, and the winner gets to keep both eggs.
